The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw.IV) Ausf.D was a medium tank that entered Wehrmacht service in October 1939. Its production continued until October 1940, with only 232 units of this version built. About 30 tanks were adapted for combat in the demanding conditions of the North African desert—they were equipped with advanced ventilation systems and special sand filters. The Panzer IV Ausf.D tanks in Africa served in the famous Afrika Korps formation led by General Erwin Rommel, taking part in key desert battles, including Gazala and El Alamein.
