The plastic model kit Aoshima 05133 Japanese Light Cruiser Oi in 1/700 scale is a remarkably faithful miniature of one of the most famous vessels of the Imperial Japanese Navy—the light cruiser "Ōi." This kit belongs to the renowned Water Line series, celebrated for its high level of detail and realistic recreations of historical warships.

The "Ōi" ship is a member of the Kuma class, designed in Japan in the interwar period. Built at the Sasebo shipyard, it entered service in 1922. Its purpose was fast reconnaissance and support operations for the main naval forces. In the 1930s, the ship underwent modernization, becoming a torpedo cruiser—one of the most heavily torpedo-armed ships in the world, outfitted with as many as 40 610 mm torpedo launchers. During World War II, it participated in convoy duties, supporting landings, and operations in the waters of the South Pacific. Its intense service ended in 1944 after being sunk by an American submarine.

The model is made from high-grade plastic, ensuring durability and precise detailing. The kit includes numerous sprues with very well-reproduced elements of the deck, superstructures, and armaments. The manufacturer has also paid special attention to the realistic representation of the characteristic torpedo launchers and the cruiser’s slim silhouette. The model is designed to be built in a "waterline" configuration, meaning a partially submerged waterline, making it an attractive choice for maritime dioramas.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
