Montex K48204 SPITFIRE MK Vb Trop 1/48 – Painting Masks

Montex K48204 is a dedicated set of painting masks designed for the 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk Vb Trop fighter model. This product has been specially created for modelers building classic British aircraft from World War II—it's one of the most important tools to facilitate precise painting of both cockpit glazing as well as all tactical and national markings.

  • Scale: 1/48
  • Intended for: Spitfire Mk Vb Trop
  • Category: Painting mask set for plastic models
  • Material: High-quality self-adhesive foil – black matte for cockpits, semi-transparent and flexible for markings
  • Application: Cockpit, frames, national insignia (RAF), tactical markings, chevrons, numbers.

Historical Information: The Spitfire Mk Vb Trop was widely used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the North African and Mediterranean campaigns during World War II (years 1941–1945). It featured a modified cowling with a Trop filter, adapted to harsh desert conditions. It also served in allied countries such as South Africa, the USA (USAAF), and Poland. This edition of the model allows for an accurate recreation of the markings of aircraft operating, among other places, during the Battle of Malta—making Montex masks an ideal choice for enthusiasts seeking authenticity and detail.

The K48204 set includes as many as three mask variants:

  • Mini Mask – masks for cockpit windows.
  • Maxi Mask – masks for cockpit windows and stencils for markings (RAF roundels, numbers, chevrons, letters).
  • Super Mask – masks for cockpit and markings based on unique designs derived from historical sources, including clear four-view drawings of the plane.

The cockpit masks are made from black matte foil—perfectly contrasting with the glazing, which greatly facilitates precise application. A modern feature is also the inclusion of masks for painting cockpit frames from the inside—a unique innovation that increases model realism. All stencils are provided on foil with suitable flexibility and adhesive strength so as not to damage the paint layer, while ensuring perfect adhesion even on heavily curved surfaces.

For whom? This product is recommended for intermediate and advanced modelers (difficulty level 3/5)—it saves time and improves the finish quality of the Spitfire Mk Vb Trop model, eliminating the need for laborious hand-masking. Essential if you expect perfect, sharp edges on painted canopies and historical markings.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
