Le Superbe was a three-masted, two-deck sailing ship armed with as many as 74 cannons, making it classified as a second-class French ship of the line. Designed by the famous architect Jacques-Noël Sané and launched in 1784 at the shipyard in Brest, Le Superbe impressed both with its beautiful silhouette and combat capabilities – it could accommodate over 700 sailors on board and store supplies for voyages up to 6 months long. Notably, Le Superbe joined Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse’s fleet, taking part in actions of the French Navy during the turbulent years of the French Revolution and wars with England. Unfortunately, the unit met a tragic end, sinking in a storm in 1795.
