A-Model 72202 A-40 KT 1/72 – plastic seaplane model kit

The A-Model 72202 A-40 KT 1/72 scale plastic model kit is a meticulously recreated miniature of the Soviet experimental amphibious aircraft from the Cold War era. This unique set is especially aimed at enthusiasts of less typical aviation designs and collectors of Soviet aircraft.

Historical Information

The Beriev A-40 "Albatros" (NATO code: Mermaid) is a pioneering Soviet amphibious jet aircraft designed in the 1980s by the Beriev design bureau. It was the world's first heavy jet-powered flying boat and also the largest amphibious aircraft ever built, developed for the needs of the Soviet Navy. Its intended roles included sea patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime search and rescue. The prototype's first flight took place in 1986. It underwent intensive testing in the late 1980s and continued to be used for experimental purposes into the 1990s. The kit represents the prototype version.

Target Group and Difficulty Level

The A-Model 72202 A-40 KT 1/72 scale kit is recommended for intermediate and advanced modelers due to its unusual construction and the need for hand-painting details. We rate the kit's difficulty at 3 on a 5-point scale. It's also a treat for Cold War enthusiasts and modelers seeking rare, hard-to-find aircraft for their collections.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
